One of my favorite Mayi related developments of 2010 was the beginning of what has been a fun experience for me – creating jewelry for bridesmaids. My first bridal client was my best friend, but little by little I have extended my services to other women who have heard about me by word of mouth.

One of my recent commissions was for an April wedding. I showed the bride a few different gemstone options, and she loved the rough, unpolished look of rutilated quartz. We paired them with gold bow posts. I love the juxtaposition of the feminine and dainty bows with the more unusual rutilated quartz.

My younger sister was nice enough to snap some pictures of her friend (and future UMich-er) Caroline, layering Mayi’s lapis chunk necklace with a delicate key pendant of her own.

Her effortless combination of both pieces creates a playful look while maintaining a sense of sophistication. I love it!

A few weeks ago, downtown Coral Gables celebrated the kick-off of its annual Restaurant Week with “Taste of the Gables,” an event where various restaurants share samples of some of their best dishes. Mari Gallet, the Executive Director at the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables, was interviewed by Deco Drive and wore a Mayi necklace.

The necklace has a large, irregular lapis lazuli chunk and pink coral branches on a hammered goldfill chain.

Every few months I try to clean out my space. I look through all of my gemstones and beads and decide what I am going to keep and what I will donate to charity. A few months ago I found a few leftover lava rocks and made two necklaces with the lava pieces and large shell pearls. They were an instant hit!

One is worn by my friend Eliana who works at Mayda Cisneros and the other is worn by Alina Mayo Azze at Univision (she bought hers at Miss Pepper boutique in South Miami).

Last month, my best friend got married and asked me to make earrings for the bridesmaids. The bride is classic and loves pearls, so we used light pink and cream pearls and milky chalcedony to create these custom drop earrings.

I know it’s difficult for brides to find thank you gifts for the bridal party. Giving them custom jewelry they can wear for the wedding and use after is a great way to say thanks and have something special for the big day.

My friend Patty sent me this photo of her wearing the three strand shell pearl necklace on a recent trip to Boston. She’s proven how versatile the piece really is. Malachite started popping up a lot in jewelry and accessories in 2009 and it seems the trend is here to stay. I just got these malachite beads in yesterday but I am still not sure what I’ll make with them. What do you think about the gemstone? Do you love it or hate it? Vote below:

I get really excited when someone wears one of my pieces to a big event like a wedding, or in this case, senior prom. Take a look at my friend Tati wearing my shell pearl and gold vermeil earrings. These are classic earrings she’ll wear well after this event. I love how they look with her dress!
